Hot Trade at Charolais March Sale

A packed ringside bid furiously for one of the largest offerings of Charolais cattle ever presented at a Northern Ireland Charolais Club sale.

Seven of the bulls on offer made 4000gns and over and the 54 bulls sold averaged £2468.47 while the 14 females averaged £1914.28. A dispersal from Ballyedmond Castle Farms at the end of the sale saw two cows with calves at foot average 2200gns and the five in –calf females which were offered averaging £1400.

Topping the bull sale was an enthusiastic young breeder, Darren McKay from Ballymena who brought out Rowandale Burbon, an Annaskeagh Sandman son out of a Harestone Nighthawk daughter, to realise 4,900 gns. This first prize winner was knocked down to Martin O’Kane, Dungiven.

Martin Donaghy, Dungannon was next in the price stakes with Crannon Bebo, an Oldstone Egbert son which stood second to the reserve overall male champion in its class and afterwards sold to James McKeagney, Upperlands for 4,400gns.

There was keen bidding for Ballyreagh Blaze the Doonally New son from Stephen Somerville’s herd at Ballygawley. This bull is out of the Oldstone Egbert daughter, Ballyreagh Paula which bred the supreme female champion at the NI National Charolais Show at Fintona in 2005 and the supreme male champion at this same event in 2006. With this strong breeding behind him and a second prize rosette to his credit he made 4,100gns and was purchased by K. Martin, Newcastle.

Malcolm Surphlis made a worthwhile journey from Lisnaskea to sell Waterview Bruno, a Doonally New son out of a Derrygiff Mills daughter for 4000gns to Mark Elliott, Ballinamallard, while another Doonally New son , also from Co.Fermanagh made 4000gns for Victor Bothwell with Coolembley Boy selling to Adrian Wilson, Ballymena. Also selling at 400ogns was Dartonhall Bobby, a Doonally Nicefor son out of a Doonally New daughter exhibted by John Erskine, Killylea and selling to William Hoey, Fivemiletown.

The final fall of the hammer at 4000gns was for Killadeas Connor a young Dunlon Ulick son out of a Harestone Nighthawk daughter from Stuart and David Bothwell’s herd at Ballinamallard. Killadeas Connor was reserve junior champion and was knocked down to Billy Glazebrook, Scotland.

Leading the female prices was John Currie's Tullygarley Anita which judge, Neil Caul, Dundee chose for his reserve supreme championship She is a daughter of Tullygarley Rollerball whose progeny has been selling well with a daughter making 5500gns at the Cracker Sale in Carlisle and a son making the reserve championship and a price of 9000gns at Perth in 2006. She was sold in calf to Goldies Unbeatable the supreme champion at Perth in October 2004 which was purchased for 25,000gns. She was knocked down to D. Herron, Broughshane for 4000gns.

Second in the female prices was her stable mate Tulygarley Annette which was reserve female champion. This daughter of Goldies Unbeatable and out of a Derrygiff Mills daughter made 3500 gns selling to William Harron, Glenavy.

Standing third in the class to these two heifers was Drumlone Anna a Brampton Embark daughter from Kenneth Veitch's herd at Lisbellaw. She sold for 2400 gns to very successful Charolais breeder, John McMordie, Ballygowan for 2400gns.
