Charolais demand reaches 7000gns

Demand for Charolais continued unabated with bulls at the Northern Ireland Charolais Club’s April 2007 show and sale in Dungannon selling to 7000gns with an average of £2314 for the 22 bulls sold. The females sold to 3300 guineas and averaged £1885 for seven heifers.

Judge, Danny McKay had his eye on Dartonhall Amazon , a superior carcase bull, from his arrival in the ring and awarded him the senior male championship, overall male and eventually supreme champion of the show. He then went on to bid to 7000gns to acquire this breeding line. Bred by John Erskine

at Killylea in Co.Armagh this bulls has a wealth of quality breeding behind him. He is by the French bull, Major one of the most famous bulls in France and his dam and grand dam were both all-Ireland champions. His dam is by Indurain and the grand dam by Jupiter.

Next in the price line-up was a bull which stood third to the champion in its class, from Cecil McIlwaine’s herd at Newtownstewart. Corrick Aristocrat, a Doonally New so n, is superior for both carcase and maternal traits and was snapped up by Dungannon purchaser, Sean Small.

Caldwell McAskie, Omagh had the second prize winner in the champion’s class which continued to follow the champion to the championship line-up taking the reserve senior male award. Mountjoy Amulet is a superior carcase bull by Tullgarley Superman, a stock sire purchased from John Currie’s herd at a previous club sale. He was knocked down to Malcolm Fleming of Magherafelt for 3000gns.

Selling at 2900 gns was one of the younger bulls in the sale, an elite bull, which carried a third prize rosette for Cecil Robinson, Ballygowan. This Doonally New son out of an Oscar daughter had an EBV of CH33 with a 400 day weight of 760kgs and met keen demand selling eventually to R. Kennedy of Claudy.

It was another Doonally New son which came next in the price stakes with Dominic Arthur , Dungannnon selling Dernaseer Archie to Fred Hanna, Ballymoney for 2700gns. Also making 2700 gns was the junior male champion and reserve champion of the show exhibited by William McVey of Carnlough. Ballyvaddy Braveheart, a Roundhill Ohoh grandson will travel all the way to Tony Brady’s farm in Galway to his new home.

The female section of the show realised a top price of 3300 gns which was paid by John McMordie, Ballygowan who is aiming to keep up the quality he was showing at Perth. He purchased Drumlone Anna, a Brampton Embark daughter exhibited by Kenneth Veitch, Lisbellaw. Kenneth also took the female championship with Drumlone Abba a Simpsons Gregg daughter which is out of Drumlone Tarka, the junior female champion at the NI National Charolais Show at Fintona. She sold to James McCurdy, Broughshane for 2900gns.

James McBride sold his second prize winning heifer Moorlough Amber, by Moorlough Palo to Vivian McGee Dungannon for 1600gns and Harold Crawford sold his reserve female champion, Tonaghmore Angel for 1450 gns.
