Bulls and Female Red Hot Trade

A top price of 7000gns, a bull average of £2553 for the 46 bulls sold, a heifer average of £3024 for five heifers and a cow and calf unit selling for 4200gns. These were the outstanding features at the Northern Ireland Charolais club’s show and sale in Dungannon Farmers Mart in March 2007.

After making the record of 32,000gns for a Northern Ireland bred bull at Perth, John McMordie, Ballygowan continued his success by taking the Northern Bank’s reserve overall male champion and top price of the show, in addition to selling 3

other animals, including the twin to his top priced bull, for 3800gns,3500gns and 2800gns.

The 7000gn sale topper was Solitude Aled, a Doonally New son which was awarded senior male champion and reserve overall male champion. Aled is an Elite carcase bull with an EBV of 34 and is out of McMordie’s best cow, a Jupitor daughter. This same breeding combination, John McMordie points out produced the 25,000gn Perth champion in October 2006. The purchaser was Noel McIlwaine, Plumbridge.

Next in line in the sale prices was Brogher Adam, a first prize winner from Trevor Phair’s herd at Florencecourt which sold for 6400gns. This was another Doonally New son, out of an Oldstone Egbert daughter with superior rating for both carcase and maternal traits and sold to Damien McGarrell , Glenarm.

Yet another Doonally New son took the 5600gn price tag for Stuart and David Bothwell, Ballinamallard. Killadeas Andy is an Elite carcase bull out of a Harestone Nighthawk daughter and sold to Dominic McParland, Camlough.

The next three prices were all taken by W H Robson and Sons, Ballyclare and these included the supreme champion and the reserve senior male champion. Kilbridefarm Allstar and the Northern Bank supreme champion, Kilbridefarm Alladin , two elite bulls by Gilbert Crawford’s stock sire, Allanfauld Superscot and out of Doonally new daughters sold for 5000 and 4500 gns. The purchasers were A. Magill, Carnlough and well known Charolais breeder and veterinary surgeon, Noel McCrea, Coagh. Another Doonally New son from the Robson stable, Kilbridefarm Antrim, which was reserve senior male champion, sold to Ms Harron, Glenavy for 3800gns.

The twin to John McMordie’s top priced bull, a superior bull for carcase and maternal traits sold for 3800gns to J. Muldoon, Kesh, while George Henderson, Bushmills sold a superior Goldies Usher son which carried a red rosette for 3600gns to James O’Rawe, Ballymena.

John McMordie was in the top prices again when his second prize winning bull, Solitude Adonis sold for 3500gns. This superior bull is a Doonaly New son out of a Derrygiff dam which was the top price and female champion at the club’s November 2001 sale. The purchaser was Barney McKeown, Newry.

Topping the female prices was Trevor Phair’s Brogher Beverley, a maiden heifer by Moorlough Palo which was female and overall reserve champion and sold for 4200gns to Ian Newell, Portadown.

The reserve female champion was exhibited by Kenneth Veitch , Lisbellaw and this Doonally New daughter sold to Philip White, Garvagh for 3100gns. Philip also purchased a Brampton Embark daughter out of an Oldstone Egbert cow from Adrian Richardson, Maguiresbridge for 3900gns.

A cow by Bassett Judge with a quality heifer calf by the 25,000gns Goldies Unbeatable at foot realised 4200gns for John Currie, Ballymena and went home to Edward McKee, Tandragee.

6400 - Trevor Phair, Florencecourt ,Brogher Adam (Doonally New) to Damien McGarrell, Glenarm,
