Successful Charolais young judge’s event at Muckamore Pleasant weather and the breath taking view from Oldstone Hill Muckamore Co Antrim proved
an excellent crowd puller for the Northern Ireland Charolais Club young judging competition to select a team to travel to the farm of Allaister Houston Scotland on 3rd July.
Harry Marquess, his wife Jean and family hosted the event on their family farm, with many premium Charolais cattle on view and with much deliberation of the stock judging, all ages enjoyed the challenge of marking their judging cards. Stewart Bothwell, president of the British Charolais Society was the master judge for the evening and United feeds who sponsored the evening was represented by Alan Boyd.
Droves of young people of all ages came to test their judging skills on the fine stock on display, with the under 14 years section, Marquess Shield being won by Kyle Crawford Fintona, whose dad Harold is no stranger to exhibiting award winning Charolais stock.
It was encouraging to see the number of young people who gave up their usual Saturday night socializing to take part in the competition with high scores going to a tie breaker! After a close contest the winning team emerged with Ben Sinnamon, Pomeroy and Stuart Wilson, Derrylin topping the scores for the second year running. Not to let the boys take all the places, the McGovern Sisters, Clodagh and Eimear tied jointly to complete the team destined to represent Northern Ireland in Scotland in July. The girls hail from Fintona and have been showing cattle for their Dad, Sean McGovern from an early age.
Ben Sinnamon is no stranger to stock judging awards, after winning the young judging last year, he went on to reach the highest score at the main stock judging event at Royal Show, he also went on to win the Faithewaite Trophy along with William McMordie, Ballygowen, this accolade took Ben to the French national Charolais Show in La Roche-sur-Yon.
Alan Boyd representing sponsor United Feeds said, This is a wonderful opportunity for young people to gain skills necessary to ensure that the Charolais cattle breed will continue to produce good growth and conformation in order to provide the top quality of beef the consumer demands. It is also encouraging to see such a high turn out of young and not so young here this evening.”
