2009 Charolais Spectacular

An impressive entry of over 100 pedigree and commercial Charolais cattle turned out at the Northern Ireland National Charolais Show at Fintona on 4th September. Both the supreme and supreme reserve female of the show went to the Coolnaslee herd of Gilbert Crawford of Maghera. A repetition of his success last year!

The Supreme Champion, homebred Coolnaslee Countess sired by the world famous Allanfauld Superscot and dam Coolnaslee Trella .This fine animal has gained a swathe of prizes this show season including champion and reserve interbreed champion at Ballymena, Ballymoney, and Clogher as well as first in Omagh. Coolnaslee Countess in now in calf and will prove to be a worthy dam to prize winning animals in the future.

The reserve female Champion Coolnaslee Diane Another Allanfauld daughter with dam Coolnaslee Pearl. This animal again has gained many accolades over the past season including first in it’s class at Balmoral.

The Supreme Champion Bull went to local breeder Will Short for a fine year old bull home bred WoodPark Diamond sired by Rumsden Tsar and dam WoodPark Renata. This was Diamond’s first show and what a result! The Sire Rumsden Tsar is proving to produce a line of prizewinners with another homebred Wood Park Arizona selling for 11,000gns.

The reserve supreme champion of the show went to Sunnydene Douglas bred by A Crane, the sire yet another off spring of Allanfauld Superscot and dam Windmill Vivienne. This fine animal was purchased in Dungannon at June sale is owned by H C Stubbs and A Burleigh, both no strangers to winning at show events. The dam Windmill Vivienne herself a prizewinner, awarded champion in Tullamore a few years ago.

The intermediate female champion went to Ratoary Disco owned by S McGovern. Sired by Oldstone Egbert and dam Florence Tess another award winner from the Ratoary herd, with the reserve champion coming from V McDonald’s herd Glencoe Duchess sired by Bova Sylvain and dam by Glencoe Vienna.

The junior female champion came from their Brigadoon herd of J A Connolly. Birgadoon Ena a fine heifer sired by Royal Val D’Or and dam Brigadoon Athena. The reserve junior female champion went to H Crawford with Tonaghmore Ella sired by tonaghmore Augusto and dam Chanterhill Pansy.

The intermediate bull champion went to Wood Park Diamond sired by Rumsden Tsar and dam Wood Park Renata and owned by W Short. The promiseing young bull went on to win the supreme champion of the show. A fine achievement on his first show. The reserve intermediate champion went to Newry breeder P Brown with Shanlieve Duke a one year old homebred bull sired by Shanlieve Titus and dam by Shanlieve Voila.

The junior champion bull went to another of V McDonald’s herd Glencoe Everready, a son of Ashleigh Victor and dam Glencoe Vanessa The reserve junior champion went to Ratoary Evander another winner from the herd of S McGovern sired by Dartonhall Brandy and dam Beechdale Sooty.

The judge for the evening Peter Donger stated “this is an impressive line up of premium Charolais cattle. The breeders in the province are among the best in the British Isles and I always look forward to coming here, even though judging such wonderful cattle is an arduous task”

The Commercial Champion of the Show sponsored by Fane Valley Co-Op went to Bushmills Bad Boy a young suckled male born in 2009 and owned by McAfee Bros and J Alexander.This calf was bred from a blonde/blue cross and Dunally New. This was a fine example of a cross bred animal and how the Charolais breed contribute to the beef industry. McAfee Bros and Mr Alexander are no strangers to the commercial section with a host of potential show cattle being exhibited at the forth coming show and sale in Ballymena.

The reserve commercial champion went to Laddy owned by Oliver Loughran Cookstown. A fine junior steer bred from a Belgian Blue cow. Mr Loughran also had success with Laddy, a son of Ashleigh Victor at Balmoral where he won the reserve commercial champion.
