The Ballycastle competition was a clean sweep for Sean McCambridge of Fairhead who took first and second prizes in both the steer and heifer sections. His first prize steer which was also the champion weighed 525 kilos and sold for £755, while his second prize steer weighed in at 390 kilos and made £725. John McAuley from Cushendall took third place in the steer section with a 285 kilo steer which made £495.
Sean McCambridge’s prizewinning heifers each weighed 340 kilos with the first prize one selling for £600 and the second prize one for £565. In third place in the heifer section was Pat McAuley of Cushendall whose 255 kilo heifer made £455.
Another producer of top quality calves claimed the bulk of the prize money and prices at Hilltown Mart. Leo Fearon form Rostrevor claimed all three awards and the championship in the heifer section along with first and third prizes in the bull section. His supreme champion which was also the first prize heifer weighed 300 kilos and sold for £790 while his second and third prize heifers each weighed 360 kilos and sold for £590 and £540 respectively. His first prize bull scaled 438 kilos and was knocked down at £780 while his third prize animal weighed 420 kilos and sold for £700.
Another Rostrevor producer, Joe Doyle took second place in the bull section and sold his 378 kilos animal for £820.
John McGrath, chairman of the NI Charolais Club extended congratulations to all of these producers and said that he was delighted to see their quality breeding and management being rewarded in the sale ring. He also thanked Ulster Bank for their sponsorship which encouraged farmers to bring out quality calves and allowed purchasers to see the value of the Charolais breed in today’s beef industry.
